Base Building Guide

Module priority, planning mode, Lab placement, and outpost strategy for Sota7. Based on official developer materials and the August 31, 2026 Steam demo.

The Planning Mode System

Honeycomb uses a modular planning mode for construction โ€” you enter a top-down/3rd-person building view where you can place, rotate, and preview modules before committing materials. The "Solarium Curved" module shown in screenshot_8 illustrates the planning interface: a yellow holographic construction beam confirms active placement, and the structure glows with a teal energy outline until confirmed.

All structures are placed on a grid but the grid adapts to terrain โ€” you can build on slopes. Modules snap to each other at attachment points, creating a contiguous base rather than isolated scattered structures.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Planning Mode Tip

Use planning mode to design your full base layout before placing anything. The preview costs nothing โ€” you only spend materials when you confirm placement. This prevents inefficient arrangements that waste materials on rework.

Module Priority: What to Build First

Not all modules are equal in your first hour. Here is the recommended build order, validated from the demo:

PriorityModuleWhy FirstKey Materials
1 ๐Ÿ  Starter Shelter Prevents environmental damage at night; required anchor for all other modules 8ร— plant fiber, 4ร— stone chip
2 ๐Ÿ“ฆ Storage Unit Expands carry capacity; prevents resource loss from inventory overflow 6ร— plant fiber, 2ร— stone chip
3 ๐ŸŒฑ Greenhouse Closes the food/water loop; eliminates constant hunger-scavenging 10ร— plant fiber, 4ร— stone chip, 2ร— mineral crystal
4 ๐Ÿ”ฌ Laboratory Unlocks crossbreeding โ€” the core game mechanic and EON Corp mission progression 12ร— plant fiber, 8ร— stone chip, 4ร— mineral crystal, 2ร— metal fragment
5 โ˜€๏ธ Solarium (Curved) Passive energy / light generation; powers advanced lab equipment and defensive structures 6ร— metal fragment, 4ร— crystal specimen, 2ร— mineral crystal
6 ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Defensive Structure Deters aggressive fauna that emerge near base at night in later biomes Unlocked post-Lab; requires crossbreeding research to access

Base Layout Strategy

The Hub-and-Spoke Pattern

The most efficient layout places the Shelter at center, with the Lab, Greenhouse, Storage, and Solarium on four cardinal attachment points. This minimizes walking distance between the most-used modules and leaves the outer ring for defensive structures and future expansion.

The base visible in screenshot_1 (nighttime view) shows an early-game Hub layout: the teal-paneled spacecraft-style structure at center with attachment points visible on the left side, and room for expansion toward the right staircase structure.

Forward Outposts

When you're ready to explore the Purple Canopy Forest or Crystal Caverns, build a minimal forward outpost at the biome border. A forward outpost requires only:

You do NOT need a Lab at a forward outpost โ€” bring specimens back to your main Lab for processing.

The Solarium Module

The "Solarium Curved" module shown in screenshot_8 is the circular glass-domed structure being placed with a yellow planning-mode beam. It appears to be a passive energy/light generator. Key placement considerations:

โš ๏ธ Placement Warning

The base at night (screenshot_1) shows red warning lights active on the hull structure โ€” these indicate nearby active threats. Build on flat elevated terrain with clear sightlines in at least three directions, especially toward the north (the primary direction aggressive fauna tend to approach from in the Amber Plains biome).

Greenhouse: Closing the Food Loop

The Greenhouse is arguably the most important module for long-term stability. Once placed, it allows you to:

  1. Plant scanned edible species in controlled soil beds
  2. Grow them to harvest without exploring โ€” passive food generation
  3. Later: transplant crossbred hybrid plants with enhanced caloric density
  4. Eventually: grow rare biome specimens inside safe conditions for crossbreeding

Starting crops: Plant at least 2 Low-Scrub Fruit Bush specimens (edible fruit, fast regrowth) and 1 Orange Stalk Plant (nutrient-dense) for a baseline food cycle that covers Hunger without needing to leave your base camp for the first 48 in-game hours.
